With its growing community of artists, Danville is looking forward to the creation of a downtown art district, beginning with murals on the walls of its eclectic commercial architecture and alleyways. Refurbishing the building walls and utilizing them as canvases for murals will help establish downtown Danville as a destination point as well as complement other efforts to revitalize the downtown streetscape. Serving as focal points scattered throughout the Mill Street corridor, they will help to attract residents, shoppers and businesses downtown.
The murals are intended to capitalize on the many themes of Danville’s rich history. Beginning where Mill and Bloom Streets intersect, we plan a sequence of murals extending the length of Mill Street to the Riverfront. With our successful mural project in the summer of 2009, we created Danville’s first mural with the help of interns and funding from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and technical assistance from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Society. However, the mural would not have been possible without the assistance of our Danville partners, which included local artists, the Board of Commissioners of Montour County, the Iron Heritage Festival, the Montour County Historical Society, Danville High School, and many businesses and individuals who contributed their time and effort.
The mural covers nearly 1200 square feet on the south side of the building at 9 Mill Street, facing the Susquehanna River and River Front Park. For those crossing the bridge from Riverside to Danville’s southern gateway, there is an unobstructed view of the mural, which evokes the place the river has in the hearts of Danville’s inhabitants.
